Indonesian Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto inspected the interim Falcon 7X and 8X Indonesian Air Force jets at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on December 28, 2022. This plane is part of the TNI’s program to get more advanced and modern defense equipment as part of its “Strength Development” plan.
Prabowo explained that the strengthening of the Indonesian Air Force with two Command and Control aircraft, or Kodal aircraft, was intended for elements of the leadership who were expected to be able to move quickly to carry out the leadership functions of the TNI Headquarters, and the Three Forces.
“This allows the TNI leadership to move more quickly.” Dassault’s 7X and 8X Falcons are French aircraft. “The two aircraft will eventually become the newest 8X,” Defense Minister Prabowo said on the Indonesian Defense Ministry website.
A strong TNI is necessary for Indonesia because it is a large country and has so many islands and a sizable ocean and land area that it urgently needs a powerful air defense.
Defense Minister Prabowo stated, “The President of the Republic of Indonesia gave me the responsibility to plan and increase the TNI’s strength.
In the world of defense, there is a Latin saying that goes, “Si vis Pacem Para Bellum,” which means “If you want peace, you must prepare for war. Also, things are changing quickly in all parts of the world right now. This includes adjustments to a complex and dynamic strategic environment that continues to move on a national, regional, and international level. This can raise a number of threats, both military and non-military, as well as hybrids, which are expected to continue to pose a threat to the interests of the nation in the future.
“Because Indonesia is a large and wealthy country, it must be strong.” Because of this, the TNI needs to be a strong mainstay so that we can protect our wealth by getting high-tech combat planes and other modern defense equipment. “So, having the Falcon 7X and 8X planes in front of us is a clear sign that the Ministry of Defense has taken concrete steps to anticipate all of this,” said Defense Minister.
The Dassault Falcon 7X and 8X jets were included in the documentation for the procurement contract for the interim multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA), in this case the Rafale fighter. Six Rafale fighter planes and the VIP Falcon 8X plane are part of the MRCA contract. This contract is the initial stage of the procurement contract for 36 additional Rafale aircraft, which is still in the budget planning stage.
The Falcon 7X and 8X aircraft are an attempt by the Ministry of Defense to reach an agreement with Dassault Aviation under which they will receive VIP transport aircraft in addition to Rafale fighter aircraft. The Dassault Falcon 7X and 8X aircraft have the benefit of a long range and good landing performance on short runways.
“I hope that the presence of these planes will lead to an increase in human resource skills so that these planes can be used properly,” Defense Minister said.
The actual Falcon 8X planes will be sent out in stages over the course of about a year. The airplane is still in the process of being made. But with the MRCA procurement contract’s interim aircraft handover, we as users can use this aircraft for operational and training purposes for pilots, mechanics, and crew cabins. This way, when the real aircraft arrives later, the Indonesian Air Force will be ready and able to operate and maintain it.
On March 15, 2022, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto accepted a meeting invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris to discuss the two countries’ defense cooperation relations.
During this meeting, the two countries talked about a number of important topics, including their efforts to work together on defense.
This meeting addressed the continuation of plans to purchase Rafale jets and Scorpene submarines from France, as agreed upon at a meeting between the two countries on February 10, 2022, in Jakarta.
In addition, Indonesia and France previously reached agreements on three other agreements: a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Offset Program and ToT collaboration between Dassault and PT Dirgantara Indonesia, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the telecommunications sector between PT LEN and the Thales Group, and a collaboration on the production of large caliber ammunition between PT Pindad and Nexter Munition.
